Happy Valentines! It's time to start posting your fics! Here are the guidelines:

Katie has created a category on RLFic.net for us. If you post there (and I hope you do!), you can use whatever categories you normally would use, but please also choose Challenges & Contests and then choose 2010 Valentines Fic Exchange. The link to the category where you'll be able to read all (hopefully!) the exchange fics is http://rlfic.net/categories.php?catid=14.

If you (also) plan to post on fanfiction.net I ask that you title your story as follows: "R/L Fic Exchange: Story Title" This will make searching easier for anyone looking for stories from the exchange.

Once again, a reminder to please make use of our beta post if you don't already have a beta, or if you're looking for a second or third beta. Your fic must be beta'd before it is posted! I hope this is something everyone does anyway, but as a reader I know how much more I appreciate a beta'd fic, and hope you all agree with me.

After your story is posted, please leave a comment on this post with a link to the post. Please follow these directions for submissions:

In the subject line, please put the name of the person whose prompt you received.

In the comment, please copy and paste the following, replacing anything in red with your story's information:

<b>Title:</b> <a href="http://rlfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=99999">Title</a> or <a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/s/99999999/1/Title">Title</a>
<b>Author:</b> Your Name
<b>Rating:</b> T/PG/Etc
<b>Summary:</b> Short summary
<b>Word Count:</b> 2000+

You can also include warnings (Language, sex, character death, etc.) if there are any, but it's not necessary. You can use whatever rating system you would like, but please use MA or NC-17 if there is explicit sex.

So, for example, your submission should look like this:

Subject line: KatieD

Title: The Greatest Story Ever Told or The Greatest Story Ever Told
Author: jujubee
Rating:
 NC-17
Summary: Quite honestly, the greatest story ever told.
Word Count: 2,082
Warnings: Sex and a lot of it.

Anonymous and OpenID accounts can't post clickable links in the comments, so after you post a comment I'm going to set up a separate post where I add each person's fic with clickable links to make things a bit easier.

I think everyone got a lot of wonderful comments last time, but I'm going to post this reminder again. Please, please, please leave comments on the stories posted, especially the one written for YOU! As writers, I'm sure you all appreciate how much a well thought-out comment means. While a simple "I loved this!" means a lot, too, one that points out what about it that the reader loved, or even some constructive criticism mixed in, means so much more. Please think of that when leaving a comment.

Our first exchange was a huge success by my standards. As of right now, we have 14 wonderful new fics to read, and I hope we get the last four very soon! I want to keep the momentum going, so here is the next exchange. The theme is Valentine's Day, so make sure your prompt and fic have some mention of Valentine's Day in it somewhere.

DEADLINE TO SIGN UP AND SUBMIT YOUR PROMPT: JANUARY 17 at 11:59 PM PST!
At that time, I will close this post. You should receive your assignment by 11:59 PM PST on January 18th, though it will very likely be much earlier than that. I just want to make sure I leave enough time.

Fics must be posted between February 12 through January 21. I will open a post here on February 12 where you can post links to your fics. I will also email you to remind you that posting time is open.

How to participate in a fic exchange:

1. Please think very hard and make sure you are able to fulfill your half of the exchange before you sign up.

2. Leave a comment on this post (the sign-up post) with the following information:

a) The screen name you use when posting fic or posting on message boards. (You can list as many as necessary.)

b) Your email address. I need a working email address that you check regularly to send information about the exchange, including your prompt.

c) A prompt for the author who receives you in the exchange. PLEASE MAKE IT RELATED TO VALENTINE'S DAY IN SOME WAY. You can be as vague or as detailed as you'd like. Keep in mind that all fic exchanged here will have Rory/Logan as the central theme, but you can list other pairings you'd like to see as well, a quote from somewhere that you think would be great inspiration for a fic, objects you'd like to see, etc. If there's anything you do not want to see, be sure to mention it here, too. If you don't want smut, make sure to specify that. No angst or no fluff? Let your gifter know!

d) What you will not write. This is to make sure you do not get matched up with someone who wants something you don't feel comfortable writing.

(You do not need to be a registered member to enter. Anonymous comments are acceptable! If you still need help, ask.)

3. When you receive your prompt, write it! There is no limit on how long a fic must be, but they must be at least 2,000 words. Keep in mind that there is a deadline, though, so you may not want to start an epic work-in-progress if you don't think it will be completed in time.

4. You need to make sure your fic has been beta'd before you post it. There will be a list of other authors who will volunteer their services as betas, so please be sure to make use of them. Any link to a fic that has obviously not been beta'd (and I don't mean a typo here or there, I mean constant formatting and grammar errors) will be deleted, and you will be asked to resubmit after it is beta'd. Unbeta'd stories are often times still really good stories, but a lot of readers find them too difficult to enjoy, so do your readers a favor and beta!

5. Post your fic to any site that you wish to post it to, during the deadline time. You can post here, but it is not required. There will be a final gift post open during the deadline time where you will be able to comment with a link to your fic. It is required that you post a link there in the following format:

Gift for [name of person you received in the exchange]
[Link to fic]
Rating:
Word count:
Summary:

6. Leave comments for other authors! As a rule, you should at the very least comment on the fic you receive in the exchange, but it would be great if you could read and comment on as many fics as you have time for!

That's it. Make sure to pimp this exchange to your friends. Anyone who wants to make some artwork for the exchange, please do! We really need it!

Make sure to check out the other posts in this community to sign up to be a beta (or to find a beta) and to help decide on a deadline.

If you did not receive your prompt, please comment here with the best email to reach you. It's possible there was a typo when you first posted it.

Well, after two late entries got in before I assigned everyone's prompts, we are kicking off the first annual R/L Fic Exchange with 18 writers! A really good turn out!

I'll be posting and emailing more details as the month goes on, but I'd like everyone to remember that we have a beta thread here. Four people have signed up as betas, and I hope more of you do as well. Please, please, please make use of either these betas or someone you already use. As stated in the rules, everything will have to be beta'd before being posted. If a story is riddled with spelling and grammar errors, the link will be deleted and you'll be asked to repost after beta'ing it. If you don't finish your story until right before the deadline, it's better to post it a day or two late than post it unbeta'd. (But, PLEASE! Everyone do your absolute best to stay within the deadline!)

Betas are also great if you're not sure what to do with your prompt. Email one or two of them and see if anyone has time to bounce ideas around with you. But don't email the person whose prompt you received. That would be cheating.

So, in conclusion, good luck writing, AND MAKE USE OF THE BETAS!

Cheers,
Julia
